Tips to Prepare for a Teletherapy Session

Telehealth and teletherapy are new to most of us but they are likely to be a part of our lives now. Once you try it you may find that you really like it. These tips may increase your chances of success.

Start with a quiet location. Find a place with as little background noise as possible. Some people like to call from their parked car if the weather is good.

Avoid Interruptions. If you can not be alone let others know that you do not wish to be disturbed for awhile. Close the door if possible and turn your phone to do not disturb.

Make sure you have a strong signal. If you are using WiFi check the signal strength before you start to avoid the video dropping out or having distorted audio.

Make sure your equipment is working well. If you are using a computer check the microphone and camera to be certain they are working before you start the call. Leave a charger plugged into your device if possible or at least make sure it is fully charged.

Download and install the proper app. I have selected Google Duo and WhatsApp as the most secure and easy to use applications for telehealth. Most people have a Google account already so Duo is a natural choice. Both apps can be used with iPhones, android phones, or computers. Just wait for the call at the appointed time.

Consider using headphones.  This is purely optional but they may improve your ability to hear the conversation. If you choose noise-canceling earphones be careful that they do not lead to your speaking too loudly. That could enable others to overhear what you are saying.

Avoid distractions.
it’s very natural to fidget with things while you are on the call. Try to stay focused and maintain eye contact with the doctor by looking at your phone or computer screen.

Be prepared to take notes. If you are using your phone you won’t be able to type notes into it during the call. Have proper materials handy befor the call and maybe even write down the questions you wish to ask during the call. If the call is a brief consultation the time will go fast and you’ll want to make sure you get the information you need.
